UCF Football began in January 1979 when the newly inaugurated Dr. Trevor Colborn announced he would look into a football team for the university. Within several months, Dr. Colborn and Athletics Director Jack O'Leary approved the formation of a new football team for UCF, which started play later that fall in NCAA Division III. Since then, UCF Football has seen enormous growth both with the success of its former players as well as its facilities. Several players went on to have stellar careers in the NFL, including UCF's most famous player, Daunte Culpepper. UCF Football comes home to the Brighthouse Networks Stadium in September 2007 after playing their first twenty eight seasons at the Citrus Bowl in downtown Orlando, Florida.
