Oberlin College. Dean of Students.

In response to the recommendations of the Board of Trustees outlined in the 1961 Gladieux Report, responsibilities for student affairs were consolidated under the Dean of Students, a position created in 1964. Prior to 1964, many of these duties were performed by the Dean of Men and Dean of Women, positions created in the 1890s. In 1964 the Dean of Students assumed direct supervision of all student support service offices- - placement, YMCA/YWCA, student health, among others-- and reported directly to the President. George E. Langeler served as Dean of Students from 1966 to 1989. In 1990 the office underwent another reorganization designed to bring minority concerns to the forefront. The office was reconstituted and redesignated as the Office of Student Life and Services.
