Schulz, Beatrice F., 1912-1999

Beatrice F. Schulz, 1912-1999, began a career in occupational therapy in 1931, but she switched to physical therapy in 1942. After completing her O.T. training at St. Louis School of Occupational Therapy, Schulz worked as an occupational therapist in Barnes Hospital (1934-1936) and Mayo Clinic (1936-1939). She became director of O.T. at Michael Reese Hospital in 1939. She returned to St. Louis to complete physical therapy training at the Barnes Hospital School of Physical Therapy Technicians in 1942-1943. With the P.T. faculty and staff called to active duty in World War II, she became head of the school and chief physical therapist the day after she graduated. She remained head of the school (1948-1977) when it became the Washington University Program in Physical Therapy in 1948, in the changeover from a certificate to a baccalaureate program. She pursued education credentials at Washington University (B.A 1949 and M.A. 1955). In 1949, she joined the faculty of Washington University School of Medicine, going from instructor to associate professor before retirement in 1977.
