Byrd, Daniel Ellis, 1910-1984.

Subjects treated in the documents are civil rights, including equalization of teachers' salaries and desegregation of recreational facilities in New Orleans, and education. An item of special interest is a report on The Links as a contributing organization to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. The report was written by John W. Davis in 1965. Also of interest is the group of items pertaining to the merger of the Louisiana Education Association with the Louisiana Teachers Association, and the cases Alexander Pierre Tureaud, Jr. v. Louisiana State University Board of Supervisors and Catherine Battise v. Acadia Parish School Board.

An addition to this collection includes correspondence (1947-81) by Byrd, a speech delivered by Byrd at the National Convention of the NAACP in Cincinnati (1946), and minutes of the Progressive Voters' League (1948). Correspondents are Dudley Desmare, Ida Larson, Earl K. Long, Russell Long, de Lesseps S. Morrison, Kermit A. Parker, Lydia Sceau, and Harry S. Truman. Most of the items were generated while Byrd was Assistant Field Secretary of the NAACP.
