American Legion. Dept. of Iowa.
The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, mutual-help organization for veterans of World War I. The Iowa Department of the national organization was also formed in 1919 and became an important political and social organization in the state. Prominent members included Hanford MacNider, Senator Daniel Steck, Representative James Dolliver and Frank Miles.
