Iowa State University offered veterinary courses to the first senior class in agriculture in 1872. The School of Veterinary Science was founded in 1879, making it the first state-funded veterinary school on the nation. Early physical facilities included a barn clinic and laboratory, a veterinary hospital, and sanitary building. A Veterinary Quadrangle was constructed in 1912, and housed the College until 1976, when a modern, $25.6 million complex was opened at the south end of campus.
Current College departments include: Veterinary Microbiology and Preventive Medicine; Veterinary Pathology; Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine; Biomedical Sciences; and Veterinary Clinical Services.
