German mineralogist, physicist, mathematician. Studied at Universities of Berlin, Jena; 1825 Ph. D. Universität Berlin; University of Königsberg; privatdozen 1826; professor of mineralogy and physics, 1829. Formulated law on molecular heat of a compound, 1831; discovered Neumann bands in crystal structure of iron and steel.
