John William Ramsay
John William Ramsay (1847-87), eldest son of the 12th Earl of Dalhousie, entered the Navy in 1861. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1867, appointed flag-lieutenant to his father on the Narcissus, but immediately transferred to HMS Galatea, commanded by the Duke of Edinburgh, and remained with the ship on its world cruise, 1869-71. He succeeded his father as 13th Earl of Dalhousie in 1880, and was Secretary of State for Scotland in 1886.
