Stiern, Walter W., 1914-1988

Born of parents whose families settled in Bakersfield, Water Stiern became a veterinarian and established practice there. He served in the Veterinary Corps of the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1947. In 1958, he was elected to the State Senate and remained in office until 1986, when, as "Dean of the Senate," he retired. Throughout his tenure he served on the Agriculture and Education Committees. He chaired the Public Health and Safety Committee (1963-1966) and the Revenue and Taxation Committee (1967-1974). In 1979-80, he chaired the Joint Legislative Budget Committee. His major legislative interests were: public education, postsecondary education, health and sanitation, and agriculture.
