In 1914 the Washington State Legislature passed the "Mother's Pension Law" that would provide relief for women whose husbands had died, deserted them or were inmates in state prisons or mental hospitals. In 1931, Washington State enacted an old-age assistance program for senior citizens as did other states. The Washington State Legislature established the Washington State Department of Social Security in 1937 with 6 divisions. The public assistance division later became the Department of Public Assistance. Other divisions were the old age pensions, unemployment compensation, employment service, children and the blind. The Washington State Dept. of Social Security took over administration of programs like the Mother's Pension and the old- age assistance programs when it was established.
