University of Nebraska (Central administration). Board of Regents

According to the Act of the Nebraska Legislature of February 15, 1869, which established the University of Nebraska, the government of the University was given to the Board of Regents. Originally there were twelve Regents, nine of them chosen by the Legislature, three - the Chancellor, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, and the Governor - were ex-officio Regents. In 1877 the control of the University was placed under six Regents. They were to be elected to office for terms of six years. The state constitution, as amended in 1920, provides that the general government of the University shall, under the direction of the Legislature, be vested in the six-member Board of Regents elected by popular vote from six districts on the non-partisan ballot. They serve terms of six years, two Regents being elected every two years. Officers of the Board are the President, the Vice-President, and the Secretary. The latter is appointed by the Board. The Board of Regents formulates general University policies, but leaves the creation of those policies to its administrative agents.
