Born in Tennessee; practiced law in Monroe County, Mississippi; attorney for 6th Judicial District; judge of Mississippi High Court of Appeals; colonel of 2nd Mississippi Volunteers during the Mexican War; member of the state legislature 1855-1858 and the U.S. House of Representatives 1858-1861; member of the Confederate Congress 1861-1864; lawyer and author.
