Lauderdale, John Vance
John Vance Lauderdale (1838-1931), physician and army officer, was raised in Geneseo, New York and received his medical degree from New York University in 1862. He contracted as a surgeon during the Civil War, returning to Bellevue Hospital to teach after a five month term. He served as assistant surgeon and surgeon in the U.S. Army 1866-96, retiring with the rank of major after serving at numerous western military posts. Lauderdale married Josephine Lane of Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1880 and the couple had two children.
