Clement, John, 1769-1855.

Surveyor, militia officer and judge, of Haddonfield (then in Haddon Township), Gloucester (now Camden) County, New Jersey; became a member of the Council of Proprietors of West Jersey in 1809 and subsequently served as the Council's vice-president, 1816-1832, and as its president, 1832-1851; served as a private in a local militia company until appointed adjutant of the Gloucester Brigade's 2nd Regiment (which he later also served as paymaster) in 1798; served at Billingsport with the New Jersey Militia in the service of the United States (as paymaster on the staff of General Elmer) during the War of 1812; rose in military rank with subsequent appointments in 1824 as colonel (commanding the 2nd Regiment) and in 1837 as brigadier general (commanding the entire Gloucester Brigade); was appointed a justice of the peace in 1799 and a county judge in 1805, which offices he held for many years; served in numerous other civic capacities throughout his lifetime, including as a member of the 1842 commission to select a site for the state lunatic asylum.
