Presbyterian minister, educator, and author; born in Radford, Va.; attended Union Seminary (New York, N.Y.) and Columbia Theological Seminary (Columbia, S.C.); ordained, 1883, and served as pastor in Cheraw (Chesterfield County, S.C.), 1883-1890; subsequent positions held include: a pastorate in Birmingham (Ala.), 1890-1892; professor at Southwestern Presbyterian University (Clarksville, Tenn.), 1892-1896; Lexington Presbyterian Church (Lexington, Va.), 1896-1905; First Presbyterian Church (Dallas, Tx.), 1905-1910; Second Presbyterian Church (Norfolk, Va.), 1911; president and professor at Columbia Theological Seminary (S.C.), beginning in 1911; by 1925, Whaling was a professor at a seminary in Louisville, Ky.; married, 1883, to Lucy Muller of Columbia, S.C.
