Born London, 1876; educated at Blundell School, Tiverton, Owens College, Manchester, and at universities in Leipzig and Paris. 1900-1908, lecturer in electro-chemistry at Manchester University; 1908-1921 worked with family business (silversmithery) in Sheffield, 1921-1931, Director of British Non-Ferrous Metals Research Association; 1931-1944, Goldsmiths' Professor of Metallurgy, Cambridge University.
