Hoffman, Ogden, 1822-1891

Ogden Hoffman was born October 16, 1822 in New York, the son and grandson of accomplished lawyers in that state. He graduated from Columbia College in 1840 and commenced the study of law, after which he established practice in New York City for three years. Hoffman arrived in San Francisco on May 16, 1850 and opened a law office; in March of 1851 he was appointed United States District Judge for the Northern District of California by President Millard Fillmore. Many of his decisions in this capacity involved settlement of land titles relating to conflicts between the Federal government and claimants of Mexican land grants. Hoffman died at St. Luke's Hospital in San Francisco on August 9, 1891.
