Baker, S. W. (Shirley Waldemar), 1836-1903.
Missionary and Premier of Tonga. Born in London, Baker arrived in Melbourne as a stowaway in 1852. In 1860 he was ordained as a Wesleyan minister and sent to Tonga, where he became chief adviser to King George Tupou, founder of the Tongan kingdom. Baker was recalled in 1879 by a missionary committee for unorthodox fundraising methods.
