Goethe, Ottilie, von, 1796-1872, nee von Pogwisch, writer and daughter-in-law of Goethe
Ottilie von Goethe and Anna Jameson met in 1833 in Weimar and became close friends. Ottilie von Pogwisch married August Goethe, the poet's son in 1817. Although Ottilie acted as hostess for literary and society functions in the Goethe household, and cared for her father-in-law in his last illness, the marriage was not a happy one. After its collapse, Anna Jameson helped Ottilie von Goethe rehabilitate. Jameson much admired her friend's intellectual and literary gifts - their friendship was formed when they were both in their late thirties and lasted for the rest of their lives.
