Knoles, George Harmon
Knoles earned his Ph.D. in history at Stanford in 1939 and then joined the History Department as instructor. In 1951 he became a full professor and later held the Margaret Byrne Professorship in History. He taught at overseas campuses in Britain, France, Germany, and Japan; served as department chair; and directed the Institute of American History at Stanford.
