Brown, Charlotte Vestal

Charlotte Vestal Brown Wainwright was born on June 3, 1942. She receive a B.A. in modern European history from the Women's College of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and her Ph.D. in art history from UNC-Chapel Hill . An assistant professor of art at Duke University from 1971 to 1979, Wainwright was curator of art at North Carolina State University from 1982 to 1985, and became director of the Visual Arts Center at NCSU in 1985. This later became the Gregg Museum. From 1980 to 1990, she also led a four-scholar team on a project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities that studied the people and practices behind North Carolina architecture. She retired from NCSU in 2009.
