Menaboni, Athos, 1895-1990

Athos Rodolfo Giorgio Alessandro Menaboni, a scientific ornithological painter, was born 20 October 1895 in Livorno, Italy, and died 18 July 1990 in Atlanta, Georgia. Menaboni, often hailed as a second Audubon, came to the United States (1920) first settling in New York, then Florida, and finally Atlanta where he did decorative painting for the Swan House, a major project of architect Philip Shutze. An exhibition of his work in New York (1940) lead to a commission by Robert Woodruff to paint birds found at Woodruff's south Georgia plantation which Woodruff used on the covers of his annual Christmascards (1941-1984). Menaboni's work was first published in MENABONI'S BIRDS (1950) with text by his wife, Sara. He had painted over one hundred fifty different kinds of birds in his life time. In addition to single canvas paintings, he also painted murals, illustrations for publications, and commemorative plates.
