Lingle, Walter L. (Walter Lee), 1868-1956

Walter Lingle was the 11th president of Davidson College. A member of the Davidson class of 1892, he also attended Union Theological Seminary, graduating in 1896. He taught Hebrew and Greek at the seminary for two years before beginning a career in the ministry. Lingle served as pastor in Dalton, Ga.; Rock Hill, S.C.; and Atlanta, Ga. In 1913 he became a professor at Union Theological Seminary. From 1918 to 1921 he was president of the Presbyterian General Assembly's Training School. He resigned from Union Theological Seminary in 1924 to devote his full attention toward the presidency of the Assembly Training School. In 1929 he became president of Davidson College, having served as a trustee and as president of the trustees for many years. He retired in 1941 and died in 1956.
