Sociologist; native of Charleston, SC; attended Burke High School in Charleston; 1966 alumnus of South Carolina State College (now South Carolina State University) in sociology; served in the U.S. Army, 1960-1963; received MA (1969) and PhD (1975) from Washington State University; taught sociology and African-American studies at Washington State University (1969-1971), Virginia Commonwealth University (1971-1991), and George Mason University (1991- ); president, Association of Black Sociologists, 1982-1983.
