Sherman (eldest brother) 1844 Admitted to the bar in Ohio 1848 Married Margaret Sarah Cecilia Stewart 1854 Elected to the House of Representatives as a Republican from Ohio; served on Committee of Inquiry to Kansas 1855 President of first Republican convention in Ohio 1861 Elected to Senate from Ohio 1868 Voted to convict President Andrew Johnson 1877 Appointed secretary of the treasury 1881 Re-elected to the Senate from Ohio 1880 Unsuccessfully sought Republican Party nomination for president 1884 Unsuccessfully sought Republican Party nomination for president 1885 1887 President pro tempore of the Senate 1886 Chairman, Senate Foreign Relations Committee 1888 Unsuccessfully sought Republican Party nomination for president 1890 Led action for successful passage of antitrust and silver purchase acts. 1897 Resigned from the Senate to become secretary of state 1898 Resigned as secretary of state 1900, Oct. 22 Died, Washington, D.C.
