Shurtleff, Giles Waldo, 1831-1924
Giles Waldo Shurtleff was born in Canada in 1831 and came to the United States at age three. He graduated from Oberlin College in 1859 and married Mary E. Burton in 1864. During the Civil War, he served in Company C of the 7th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, the 9th Army Corps, and the 5th U.S. Colored Troops. He reached the rank of brevetted Brigadier General. Following the war, Shurtleff returned to Oberlin to become a professor of Latin and Greek (1866-87). He also held positions as financial secretary (1873-74), Secretary and Treasurer (1887-93), and member of the Board of Trustees (1894-1904). Shurtleff died in 1924.
