United States. Army. Base Hospital No. 21 (Rouen, France)

World War I military hospital, organized by the staff of Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, Mo., and affiliated with Washington, University School of Medicine.

In 1916, anticipating entry of the United States into World War I, the American Red Cross and the War Department coordinated a plan for the establishment of military base hospitals in Europe. These units were developed from existing civil institutions, among them, Barnes Hospital, which was assigned the organization of Base Hospital 21. Unit director was Fred T. Murphy, WUSM Professor of surgery. A month after the United States declared war in April, 1917, Base Hospital 21 sailed for England. After crash military training near Liverpool, the unit was assigned service outside of Rouen, France. Following the armistice in November, 1918, Base Hospital 21 was transferred back across the Atlantic, and was demobilized in May, 1919.
