Illinois. Department of Registration and Education
The Department of Registration and Education, created by the Civil Administrative Code of 1917, absorbed powers and duties from several earlier boards and agencies (e.g., Board of Examiners; Board of Livestock Commissioners; Board of Health; Board of Pharmacy; Board of Optometry). The Department assumed responsibility for professional regulation of various professions (e.g., horseshoers; architects; structural engineers; dentists; nurses; barbers) including professional examination and licensing. Board of trustees responsibilities for Illinois normal universities and teachers' colleges were assumed by the Department which also exercised jurisdiction over the State Museum; Natural History Survey; and State Geological Survey; until these functions were transferred to the Dept. of Energy and Natural Resources (1981).
