Heywood, Scott, 1872-1950.

Heywood Brothers brought in Louisiana's first oil well in Jennings area in 1901. Before coming to Louisiana, Scott Heywood was a member of his brother Alba's Concert Company touring the U.S. and Canada. Heywood traveled to the Yukon where he was a gold miner. He was involved in the oil business in California. After settling in Louisiana, he became involved in civic affairs and politics, serving as state senator from 1932-1936. Served on the state mineral board during the 1940's; first president of the Mermentau Basin Association. Referred to as the father of the Louisiana oil industry and the father of the homestead exemption act.
