Campfield, Jabez, 1737-1821

Dr. Jabez Campfield (1737-1821), a surgeon in Captain Oliver Spencer's Regiment, accompanied Major General John Sullivan's Expedition against the Indians into Western Pennsylvania and New York, May 23-October 2, 1779. Dr. Campfield, born in Newark, and a graduate of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton, 1759), studied medicine with Dr. William Burnet, and entered the army as Senior Surgeon on Dr. Burnet's staff. He practiced medicine in Morristown, N.J. (Morris County) until his death in 1821.

Campfield was surrogate of Morris County from its beginnings (1784-1804) and founder of the Morris County Agricultural Society. His only child, William, a Princeton graduate (1784) and member of the N.J. Medical Society (1788), survived his father by only three years (d. 1824).
