La Guardia Memorial House (New York, N.Y.)

Social settlement founded in 1898 by Anna C. Ruddy as the Home Garden Settlement in the East Harlem area of Manhattan. In its early years the settlement operated as a day nursery and taught classes in cooking, sewing and carpentry. In 1916 the settlement was renamed Haarlem House, and citizenship classes for adults became a major focus of activity. The settlement adopted its current name in 1956. By the 1990s programs included day care, after school recreation, summer day camp, and athletics.
