Dorothy Lavinia Brown was the first black female surgeon in the South; first black woman admitted to the American College of Surgeons; first black woman to serve in the Tennessee State Legislature; and first single woman to adopt a child in Tennessee; b. 1919; also known as Dorothy Brown, Dorothy Lavania Brown, Dorothy Lavenia Brown, and D. Brown.
