Othersen, H. Biemann (Henry Biemann), 1930-

Othersen, Jr., H. Biemann (1930- ), was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1930. He earned his B.S.M. from the College of Charleston in 1950 and earned his M.D. from the Medical College of South Carolina (MCSC) in 1953. He spent the following 12 years pursuing his post-graduate surgical training at Philadelphia General Hospital, the University of Pennsylvania, MCSC, the Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and Massachusetts General Hospital. During this time he also served for two years in the U.S. Navy. In 1965, Dr. Othersen joined the faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina as an assistant professor of surgery and as the university's first chief of pediatric surgery. At the time, he was the first pediatric surgeon in South Carolina. Dr. Othersen has held a number of key leadership positions within the Medical University, including medical director of Medical University Hospital, associate medical director of MUSC, the first medical director of MUSC's Children's Hospital and chief of pediatric surgery. He is a nationally and internationally recognized expert in the surgical care of children. Dr. Othersen has held membership in 30 professional organizations on the local, state, national, and international level, including the Charleston County Medical Society, the South Carolina Pediatric Society, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons. He has also held leadership positions in many of these groups, serving as president of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, governor of the American College of Surgeons, president of the American Cancer Society's South Carolina chapter, president of the South Carolina Surgical Association and president of the Charleston County Medical Society. In honor of Dr. Othersen's contributions to children's health and the field of pediatric surgery, he has been recognized by his alma mater the College of Charleston; MUSC; the University of South Carolina; and the SC Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, which presented Dr. Othersen with its Career Achievement Award. Dr. Othersen was the first recipient of the SC Safe Kids Leadership award and the Chapter Chairman's award, presented by the SC Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 2007, MUSC established a lectureship to promote the continued growth and discovery in the field of pediatric surgery. It was named the H. Biemann Othersen, Jr., M.D., Endowed Visiting Lectureship.
