McGillivray, Alexander, d. 1793.

McGillivray was probably born at Fort Toulouse, Elmore Co., Ala., to Lachlan and Sehoy McGillivray. He was educated at Charleston, S.C. In 1784, known as the emperor of the Creeks and Seminoles, he negotiated the treaty with Spain at Pensacola, Fla. He visited Pres. George Washington at N.Y., N.Y., and was appointed agent of the U.S., with the rank of brigadier-general. Soon thereafter the King of Spain appointed him superintendent general of the Creek nation. He simultaneously was a member of the firm of Panton's, merchants at Pensacola, Fla. His principle residence was at Little Talasi, near what is now Wetumpka, Elmore Co., Ala. During his life he had three wives and three children. According to at least one source he died of a social disease. His death occurred on 1793 Feb. 17.
