Beard, James Carter, 1837-1913
James Carter Beard was born in Cincinnati, educated at Miami University of Ohio, and studied law under Rutherford B. Hayes. He was admitted to the bar, but pursued a career as an artist instead, following the tradition of his father and siblings. He taught briefly, served in the Civil War as a hundred days soldier, and found success as an illustrator, eventually moving to New York, where he worked as a staff artist for Scribner's and Appleton's. He produced numerous illustrations for various periodicals, as well as a number of books, and also wrote and illustrated several books of his own. He spent the last years of his life in New Orleans, writing and illustrating articles for the Daily Picayune.
