Bishop Payne Divinity School (Petersburg, Va.)
The Bishop Payne Divinity School was an Episcopal Church seminary located in Petersburg, Virginia, for the training of African Americans for the ministry. It was founded in 1878 by the Board of Trustees of the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary in Virginia as a part of St. Stephen's Industrial School. In 1884, it was chartered by the Commonwealth of Virginia as Bishop Payne Divinity and Industrial School, with its own Board of Trustees separate and distinct from the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary. When the school was empowered to confer Bachelor of Divinity Degrees in 1910, the name was changed to Bishop Payne Divinity School. The seminary closed in 1949 and merged with the Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary in Virginia in 1953.
