United States. Army. California Cavalry Battalion (1862-1865)

The California Cavalry Battalion was made up of Californians who went east in 1862 to serve in the Civil War; a second group of men joined them in 1863. The battalion became part of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry Regiment, which served with the Army of the Potomac. They saw action in skirmishes with Colonel John Mosby and his guerrillas as well as several battles including Cedar Creek. They were mustered out in July and August 1865. They are often called the California Hundred.
