Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions (U.S.)

The Bureau was established in 1874, followed by the Commission in 1884 as a distinct fund-raising body sharing staff and facilities with the Bureau. The Negro-American Mission Board was established in 1907 as the Catholic Board for mission work among colored people; it has been administered by the Bureau since 1980. In addition to the United States, the Commission served the Bahams, 1887-1916; Guam, 1905-1927; Haiti, 1920-1926; and the Philippines, 1906-1944.
