Hamilton, Ruth, 1898-

Ruth Hamilton was born in Alta, Iowa. She graduated from teacher's college in Cedar Falls, Iowa, in 1916 and began teaching in a country schoolhouse in Iowa the same year. In 1921 she married Carter Hamilton, a professional baseball player for the Cleveland Indians. She returned to school to study dramatics and English at the University of Minnesota and continued to take courses throughout her life. She subsequently taught speech and elocution classes in California and adult English classes in Hollywood and New York.

Hamilton was a prolific author of newspaper articles, travelogues, and letters to the editor. Her memoirs are contained in her unpublished work, "The Hamilton Saga." Elected twice to the New Hampshire legislature, Hamilton served in that body from 1964 to 1973. For a time she also worked in real estate and devoted time to her interests in antiques and restoring old homes. Following the death of her husband in 1949, Hamilton travelled extensively to many parts of the world and in later years gave lectures on her travels and experiences.
