Flower Family.

Richard Flower, an English brewer, and his son, George, came to Illinois and in 1818 founded the town of Albion, to typify the best of England but with the political freedoms of America. George had studied agricultural practices in France with Morris Birkbeck, who was also involved with Albion. The Flowers were a liberal, philanthropic family, who opposed slavery. Edwards County, largely due to the Flowers, was a non-slave county. Richard Flower brokered the land sale of the Rappite community at New Harmony, Indiana to Robert Owen.
