Raup, Hallock F. (Hallock Floyd), 1901-1985

Born in Pennsylvania in 1901, Hallock Raup moved to California as a young man and earned his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley. He taught at several colleges and universities including the University of California at Los Angeles and at Eastern Washington University at Cheney. From 1943 to 1945, Raup served on the Board of Geographic Names in Washington, D.C. Raup came to Kent State University in 1945 to head the Dept. of Geography. He served as department chair until 1963. After retiring from teaching in 1971, Raup continued to be active in a number of area service agencies including the Kent Hunger Task Force and Kent Social Services. During the last decade of his life, he maintained an epistolary friendship with John B. Nicholson, former director of the Kent State University Libraries. Raup was married with two children. He died in 1985.
