Harbaugh, Henry, 1817-1867

Henry Harbaugh was a Pennsylvania German clergyman, poet, and hymn writer. Born near Waynesboro, Franklin County, Pa., he left for eastern Ohio on 4 August 1836 to get an education while working in carpentry. He lived in Massilon, Stark County, Ohio until enrolling in Marshall College, Mercersburg, Pa. in November 1840. He completed his seminary studies in fall 1843 and accepted his first calling in Lewisburg, Pa. in December 1843 where he was ordained on 24 January 1844.

He moved to Lancaster, Pa. in March 1850 and remained there as pastor of the First German Reformed Church until 1 October 1860. From there he went to St. John's Reformed Church in Lebanon, Pa. until January 1864 when he became Professor of Didactic and Practical Theology at the seminary in Mercersburg. He published numerous religious works and poetry, and edited the monthly magazine, The Guardian (1850-1866).
