Mitchell, Julian A. (Julian Augustus), 1836-1907

Julian A. Mitchell was born on Edisto Island, South Carolina. Mitchell graduated from the College of Charleston (S.C.) in 1855 and was editor (1854-1855) of the College magazine. Mitchell was appointed secretary of the U.S. legation to Russia by President Buchanan in 1860 and returned from that post just after the secession of South Carolina and before the bombardment of Fort Sumter. Mitchell was a Confederate soldier and prisoner-of-war, and after the war he returned to Charleston to practice law. He was also a plantation owner (1865 and after). His wife was Caroline Pinckney Mitchell, daughter of Rev. Charles C. Pinckney.
