Paine, Clifford E., 1887-1983.
Paine, born in Fennville, Michigan, attended both Fennville High School and Holland High School. He attended Hope College from 1906-1907, then studied engineering at the University of Michigan from 1907-1911. He worked in the field of bridge design and construction. Paine worked on the design and construction of the Golden Gate Bridge from 1929-1937. As Principal Assistant Engineer, he supervised the design, fabrication, and construction of the bridge. In 1983, Paine established a scholarship to assist a Fennville High School graduate intending to enroll at Hope College.
