Smith, Julia Frances, 1911-1989.
Julia Frances Smith was born in Denton, Texas on January 25, 1911. She graduated from North Texas State University in 1930. She attended the Julliard Graduate School (1932-1939) and gained a diploma. She received a M.A. (1933) and a Ph.D. (1952) from New York University. She was a pianist for the Orchestrette Classique of New York, a women's orchestra (1932-1939). She wrote Aaron Copland: His Work and Contribution to American Music and was editor of Directory of American Women Composers. She died in New York on April 27, 1989.
