Hemphill, Robert W. (Robert Witherspoon), 1915-1985
Robert Witherspoon Hemphill (1915-1983) served in the S.C. House of Representatives (1947-1948), and as Solicitor of the Sixth Judicial Circuit (1951-1956); he won election to the U.S. House where he represented S.C.'s Fifth District in the U.S. Congress (1957-1964). President Lyndon Baines Johnson appointed Hemphill to a federal judgeship in April 1964; he took senior status in 1980, but continued to hear cases until his death in 1983.
Native of Chester, S.C.; received his undergraduate and law degrees from University of South Carolina, after which he returned to Chester and joined the family law firm of Hemphill and Hemphill in 1938.
