Wilson, Charles Haynes (1909-2002: knight, principal, University of Glasgow, Scotland)

Charles Haynes Wilson was born 16 May 1909 to George Wilson (a commercial traveller) and Florence Margaret Hannay. He was educated at Hillhead High School, the University of Glasgow , where he graduated MA in 1932 and then at the University of Oxford . His teaching posts included: Glasgow University Faulds Fellow in Political Philosophy, from 1932-1934 . From 1934-1939 Wilson was a lecturer in Political Science at the London School of Economics and then became fellow and tutor in Modern History at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, from 1939-1952. He was also visiting professor in Comparative Government at Ohio State University in1950. Wilson was Principal of the University College Leicester from 1952-1957 , Vice Chancellor of the University of Leicester from 1957-1961 and Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, 1961-1976 . He was involved in many committees including: Miners Welfare National School Scheme Select Committee, 1959-1964, Academic Advisory Committee, Royal College of Science and Technology, (now University of Strathclyde), Academic Planning Board, University of Stirling, 1964, Chairman of the Association of Commonwealth Universities, 1966-1967 & 1972-1974. Wilson received many honours including Honorary Fellow Corpus Christi College, Oxford,1963; Hon LLD Glasgow, 1957, Leicester1961, Rhodes University1964, Queens University, Kingston, Ontario 1967, Ohio State University1969, Pennsylvania, 1975; Hon DLitt Strathclyde, 1966, Heriot-Watt,1977; Hon DCL East Anglia1966. In 1976 he was awarded Chevalier, Legion of Honour. Charles Haynes Wilson died on 09 November 2002 , aged 93.
