Franks, Augustus W.
Sir Augustus Wollaston Franks (1826-1897) was born in Geneva, the son of Captain Frederick Franks, R.N., and Frederica, daughter of Sir John Saunders Sebright. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge. He became an assistant in the Department of Antiquities at the British Museum in 1851, and was the Keeper of British and Medieval Antiquities, 1866-1896. Franks served as president of the Society of Antiquaries, and was an honorary member of the Royal Academy. He died on 21 May 1897.
