Coulter, Merle C. (Merle Crowe), 1894-1958
Merle Crowe Coulter (1894-1958), was born in Lake Forest, Illinois. His father, John Merle Coulter, was a distinguished member of the faculty of the University of Chicago's Department of Botany. Merle C. Coulter followed a similar path, earning degrees from the university (B.S. 1914; Ph.D. 1919). He was appointed as an instructor in botany in 1921, and professor in 1931.
Coulter's research in plant genetics resulted in the publication of key texts such as The Story of The Plant Kingdom and Outline of Genetics. With his father, he co-authored Where Evolution and Religion Meet.
