Born in Paris 1797, died in Paris 1871; typographer, journalist; founded and led the liberal literary journal Le Globe 1824; one of the publishers of L̀'Encyclopďie nouvelle' 1836-1843; edited the Revue Indépendante 1841-1848; first person to use the word s̀ocialism' relating to the socio-economic situation of the proletariat; founded a cooperative printing office in Boussac, France in 1844; printed George Sand's L'Eclaireur de l'Indre and published La Revue Sociale 1845; member of the Assemblě Constituante in 1848; exiled 1851-1860, spent this period in England and on the Isle of Jersey.
